BIG IDEAS, small rooms. How To Make The Most Of A Tiny Space!

Live Large In Your Small Space

Decorating a small space comes with its own unique set of challenges! Maybe your entire living space is on the smaller side. OR maybe you just have a compact room you’re not quite sure how to make functional. There are certain small space solutions that can make a space feel and look larger. Just because a room is small, doesn’t mean you have to resort to boring, vanilla décor…oh no. Have some fun! It’s definitely possible to have a stylish small space filled with personality AND get the most out of every nook and cranny.

If you are looking for storage and decluttering solutions for your big OR small space, I shared some ideas here.

Small Space Solutions

Keep scrolling for some ways to maximize your square footage. Keep these tips in mind too…

  • Believe it or not, having a too-small rug for your space will make it look even smaller. Pick a floor covering that’s large enough so most of the furniture will sit on top of it OR you can use several rugs to define certain zones in a small area.
  • Choose colors wisely! Lighter colors will always make a space seem larger so you can choose to anchor your room with light-neutral colored walls or flooring and then add in some pops of color and pattern with pillows, artwork, decor, furniture or wallpaper on a designated feature wall.
  • Declutter, declutter, declutter. And when you are done with that, declutter. Too much “stuff” will dwarf your space for sure.
  • Natural light does wonders. And, it doesn’t cost a thing! So when all else fails, be sure to bring in as much natural light as possible (no black-out shades needed!).

Shine Bright

Lighting is always important when it comes to home décor, but it REALLY matters in a small space. Let’s talk about wall sconces. Did you know that you can use wall sconces without ANY electrical wiring? You can purchase battery-operated light bulbs and have great lighting anywhere in your home, even without an electrical outlet or cutting any holes in the wall. And, wall sconces will also free-up space on the floor and bring dimension to the walls. This makes them a pretty ideal option for small rooms!

Muli-Purpose, Multi-Function

So, this is certainly not a groundbreaking idea, but when you are working with a small space, you’ll want to be sure each piece of furniture is pulling its weight and has a specific function (or two!). Let your space breathe and remove any furniture that doesn’t have a purpose or is just taking up valuable real estate. Less is more in smaller spaces so don’t overcrowd or over clutter. Here are some unique pieces that will pull double duty and still look stylish.

See-Through Style

Incorporating glass, acrylic and other transparent materials into your space will allow them to blend seamlessly into surroundings. These pieces will lighten up your space and offer a good contrast to furniture made of heavier materials like wood and metal

Mirror, Mirror...You Know The Rest

Along the same lines as acrylic and glass, strategic mirror placement is also key in a small space. Since mirrors reflect light, they can make a room seem much larger than it actually is. One good-sized mirror or a gallery of smaller mirrors will introduce light and airiness into a room. You can also hang a large mirror on a blank wall and treat it like a window.

Think Vertical

Max out vertical storage with floating shelves or tall, narrow bookshelves. When working with a small area, maximizing your floor real estate is important and sometimes, the only way to go is UP.

Hanging Around

Swing chairs are fun and they seem to be having a design moment right now. They also work great in small spaces. Erin purchased an acrylic swing chair like this one for her daughter Elizabeth’s room in their new CO home. It's a great way to add seating without taking up much floor space.

Store Smart

Be sure to take advantage of unexpected spaces like in between appliances, or behind doors so you keep clutter out of sight and items tucked away. These behind-the-door organizers are great for shoes and accessories in a closet and also for canned foods or spices in a pantry. I love this appliance lift which is perfect for a stand mixer, large toaster oven, or any large appliance that takes up space on your kitchen counter.
