Date night for most people used to mean dinner and a movie. And, while there’s nothing wrong with that, we’re having to get a little more creative during these socially distant, pandemic times. The silver-lining is that we are forced to mix things up a little. As a result, we’re exploring different ways we can spend quality time with our significant other. Board games are the perfect way to spice up the entertainment on your next night in. You might even say the tension building during a particularly intense round of competition is just basically foreplay in a different form. Since there are so many games to choose from, how do you know which ones will actually be fun? We’re here to help you narrow it down. Escape Room: The Game
This game is actually designed for two players. It’s made to mimic the whole Escape Room experience in the comfort of your own home. You and your partner solve puzzles and find hidden instructions together all within a 60-minute time frame. It’s a good reminder that teamwork makes the relationship work.
Got a short attention span? This game is for you! It’s basically a funnier version of Scattergories and a great, lighter option for date night. Answer hilarious but relationship-building questions such as “terrible baby names” or “bad ideas for a tattoo.” Write only answers that start with the letter rolled. When the time’s up, you debate your answers. It’s paced just fast enough to be a conversation-starter, without it being super intense or romantic.
Looking for something a little more intense? This is the best conversation starter game to ignite some deep discussions. It’s a card game with a variety of hot topics like “Should your partner be allowed to go through your phone?” “Which is worse: physical or emotional cheating?” or “Would you do 5 years in prison for $10 million?” Break open a bottle of wine and get ready to learn something new about your long-term partner.
Kick this classic game up a notch for date night with a racy twist. Set a theme, like naughty words, for any given round. Or perhaps you must place a word on the board that has some significance to your relationship. Just be prepared to call your partner out when they try to use made-up words. Everybody does it!
If you like to be competitive and have fun at the same time, this game is for you. It’s fast, challenging and tricky, so prepare to pit your wits against each other in this highly entertaining brain-teasing game. You're given a keyword and a clue and have to find the answer. Example: If the keyword is “Sun,” and your clue says, “Reach for a spoon, not your sunglasses,” be the first to shout out “Sundae!” The first person to get it right, wins the round.
In this fast-paced game, it's OK to yell out the answer, even when it's not your turn. Each topic has eight clues and the first person to blurt out the answer wins the round. This brings you one step closer to landing on the donkey’s butt—aka Smart A**—at the center of the game. Plus, it goes fast enough that you can play multiple rounds.
This takes a bit more of a time investment on date night, but it will create lasting memories and great conversation long after the game is over. It’s basically a romantic comedy in a box. Each player creates their own character and starts a relationship with their partner’s character. Your goal is to satisfy your needs while also helping your partner satisfy theirs. The scenarios presented can be quite comical and will have you laughing together.
How can you not challenge each other to this classic, legendary game? An oldie, but goodie, players take turns circling the board, loading up cash, and building up properties. It lets you get out some of your real estate fantasies without blowing any legit cash. But as you all know, the game can run for hours, so it’s a great option when you have some solid time to kill.
This COVID-friendly travel-game, let’s you explore the U.S. without actually going anywhere. The board is a map with cities connected by colored routes. Players have “ticket” cards, and you can either draw colored train cards, claim a route by discarding a set of cards, or draw additional ticket cards for potential bonus points. It requires a little strategic thinking, but not so much that you can’t sip cocktails while you’re playing.
This card game is hilarious, and as the name suggests, not entirely politically correct. Each player draws a card and if it’s a kitten—you automatically lose the game. Avoid drawing a kitten by using cards to peek at the deck before drawing or forcing your partner to draw or shuffle the deck. The cartoon cat drawings are crazy, and it’s a fun way to engage your partner’s sense of humor.
